George Santos Abandons Attempt to Comeback for Congress Due to Lack of Funds
Former U.S. Rep. George Santos announced on Tuesday that he is ending his campaign to return to Congress, following his expulsion from the House due to federal fraud charges.
Santos, who was running as an independent candidate for the 1st Congressional District in New York, shared his decision to withdraw from the race on the social media platform X.
This decision came after it was revealed that Santos’ campaign committee had not raised any funds or made any expenditures in March, indicating a lack of progress in his campaign.
Initially running in the GOP primary against Rep. Nick LaLota, Santos later switched to run as an independent, citing differences with LaLota’s record but expressing a desire to prevent a Democratic victory in the district.
Santos was expelled from the House in December based on an ethics committee report that found evidence of lawbreaking and untrustworthiness. He faces federal charges related to deceiving Congress, misusing campaign funds, and fraudulent receipt of unemployment benefits.
Despite his withdrawal from the current race, Santos hinted at a possible future run for office in his X post.
“It’s only goodbye for now,” he wrote, “I’ll be back.”
