Georgia Appeals Court to Consider Trump’s Request to Disqualify Fani Willis
The appeals court in Georgia has agreed to hear former President Donald Trump’s request to disqualify the district attorney prosecuting him for his involvement in the 2020 election overturn attempt, as stated in a court order issued on Tuesday.
This decision extends the legal dispute surrounding the previous relationship between Fani Willis, the district attorney in Fulton County, and a former high-ranking deputy, a connection that defense attorneys have used in an attempt to derail the case.
Trump and eight other defendants facing charges in Georgia state court have appealed to the appeals court to reverse a judge’s ruling from March, which allowed Willis to remain in charge of the prosecution.
The court’s choice to consider the appeal before the trial may lead to further delays in the case, one of the four criminal proceedings Trump is currently facing as the presumptive Republican candidate in the upcoming election against Democrat President Joe Biden on Nov. 5.
Trump maintains his innocence and claims that the prosecutors are engaging in a politically motivated campaign to harm his candidacy.
