Georgia Governor Kemp Signs Legislation to Curb Actions of ‘Rogue’ Prosecutors
Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp has signed legislation SB 332 in an effort to address “rogue” prosecutors, particularly in light of the controversial actions of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her handling of the prosecution of former President Donald Trump.
Last year, Kemp signed bill SB 92 that established the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission. However, the state Supreme Court had reservations about its oversight of district attorneys. The new bill signed on Wednesday removes the requirement for Supreme Court approval.
Kemp stated, “This legislation will help hold rogue or incompetent prosecutors accountable if they fail to uphold the law. Crime rates are increasing nationwide, especially in cities where prosecutors are being lenient or neglecting their duties due to unprofessional behavior.
“When prosecutors prioritize politics over public safety, it puts the community at risk. We are committed to ensuring public safety is not compromised by prosecutors who let criminals go free. Georgians deserve better and the right to feel secure in their communities.”
Republican House Speaker Jon Burns sought to address Democratic concerns that the bill targets Willis directly, stating to reporters, “Our focus is not on any individual or situation. It’s about holding elected officials accountable and ensuring the safety of our citizens.”
