Georgia Judge Expected to Rule on DA Willis’ Case This Week

The Georgia judge presiding over the case of former President Donald Trump’s alleged interference in the 2020 election stated that he is expected to make a decision this week regarding whether Democrat Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified from the case.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee has been considering for over a week whether Willis should be removed due to conflicts of interest related to her undisclosed relationship with Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor on the case.

Following the conclusion of hearings on March 4th to determine Willis’s eligibility, McAfee announced that he would take two weeks to deliberate.

“There is a lot of information to review,” McAfee explained to WSB-FM in Atlanta last Friday, as reported by Breitbart. “… I set a deadline for myself because I know everyone is eager for an answer. Crafting an order like this takes time.”

“I am following the law and making decisions to the best of my ability based on the information available. I believe I am on track to meet the deadline I set for myself,” McAfee added.

McAfee clarified to the radio station that the length of his deliberations is unrelated to any potential challengers in the upcoming election. Civil rights attorney and radio host Robert Patillo announced last week that he would challenge McAfee, who was appointed to the bench by Republican Governor Brian Kemp in 2022.

“I had a rough draft and outline of my decision before I even heard rumors of potential challengers, so politics will not influence my ruling,” McAfee stated.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, judicial races in Georgia are nonpartisan, and the election for McAfee’s seat will take place on May 21st, coinciding with the primary for partisan races for Congress and the state Legislature.

On Wednesday, McAfee dismissed six charges from the indictment against Trump and his co-defendants in the case. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, pleaded not guilty to all charges and denied any wrongdoing.
