GOP Calls for Information Regarding Undocumented Individual Accused in Laken Riley Murder
Republican committee chairs Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Tom McClintock, R-Calif., recently sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas demanding information on Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal migrant accused of killing nursing student Laken Riley in Georgia.
Jordan, chair of the House Judiciary, and McClintock, Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement chair, are seeking documentation related to Jose Antonio Ibarra, who is facing multiple murder and assault charges in Riley’s death. Riley died from blunt force trauma while out for a run on the University of Georgia campus.
Jose and Diego Ibarra entered the U.S. illegally from Venezuela in September 2022, and the Biden Administration released Jose Ibarra into the United States, the letter revealed.
Jose Ibarra was later arrested on Sept. 14, 2023, by New York Police Department officers for charges related to a child under 17 and a motor vehicle license violation.
In their letter, Jordan and McClintock emphasized how criminal aliens exploit weaknesses in the U.S. immigration system, worsening the situation with the Biden Administration’s border and immigration policies.
The committee chairs have given Mayorkas until March 12 to provide Jose Ibarra’s case history, alien file, entry history, and information on CBP officials’ screening process.
Regarding Riley’s tragic death, she was a nursing student at Augusta University and was found dead after going for a run. Diego Ibarra, Jose’s brother, had been arrested multiple times by Athens law enforcement, including for DUI and driving without a license. He was also charged with possessing a fake U.S. permanent resident card.
Mayorkas recently faced impeachment by the House and could face a trial in the Senate, although Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is likely to push for dismissal with a majority vote in the Democrat-led Senate.
