GOP Losing Confidence in Legal System Shows Politico/Ipsos Survey
Republicans are losing faith in the U.S. judicial system, according to a new survey.
Politico Magazine and Ipsos teamed up to conduct a poll a little more than a week after President Donald Trump was found guilty of falsifying business records in New York.
Only 39% of Republicans say they have a great deal or a fair amount of faith in state court judges, according to the Politico/Ipsos poll. This marks a 10-point drop from July.
When it comes to trust in district attorneys, state attorneys, and prosecuting attorneys, only 32% of Republicans have a great deal or a fair amount of trust, a 9-point drop in 11 months, the poll found.
On the other hand, Democrats are more confident in the judicial system.
Trust in state court judges among Democrats rose from 48% in July to 61%. Trust among independents has remained relatively unchanged since July.
Faith in prosecutors among Democrats and independents also increased. Democrats went from 50% to 55% and independents went from 42% to 47%.
The survey also revealed that Republicans are less likely to believe that current or former elected officials receive special treatment in the criminal justice system.
55% of Republicans believe that current or former elected officials receive special treatment, down from 72% in July.
Democrats saw only a 3-point drop to 72%, while independents (67%) stayed the same as in July.
The survey also showed that a plurality (40%) of Americans feel that the Trump verdict has no impact on their likelihood of voting for the former president.
6% of respondents stated that they are more likely to support Trump due to the conviction, while 22% are less likely to support him for the presidency because of the conviction.
Regarding President Joe Biden’s involvement in the decision to bring the criminal case against Trump, 29% said yes and 25% said they did not know.
Regarding the Justice Department’s involvement in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s decision to prosecute Trump, 36% believe the DOJ was directly involved and 34% are unsure.
The Politico/Ipsos poll was conducted from June 7-9 among 1,027 Americans aged 18 and older, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points and a 95% confidence level.
The survey was conducted before Hunter Biden was found guilty of three felony gun charges in Delaware.
