GOP Majority in Monmouth Poll Views Trump as the Strongest Candidate Against Biden
A new poll from Monmouth University reveals that a majority of Republican voters believe former President Donald Trump is the strongest candidate to go up against President Joe Biden in the 2024 election. The poll found that 45% of Republican voters said Trump is “definitely strongest,” while 24% said he is “probably strongest.” Only 13% believed that another candidate would be “definitely stronger,” and 18% thought that another candidate would be “probably stronger.”
The poll also showed that more than half of Republicans are not concerned about the criminal indictments Trump is currently facing. 47% said they are not at all concerned, while 25% are not too concerned. On the other hand, 16% expressed some level of concern, and 11% said they are very concerned.
In terms of primary support, the poll indicated that Trump is far ahead of his rivals for the GOP nomination. 54% of respondents said they support Trump, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis received 22% support. Other candidates such as entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Sen. Tim Scott, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Vice President Mike Pence, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley each received 5% or less support.
The poll surveyed 681 Republican registered voters from July 12-19, 2023, with a margin of error of plus or minus 5.9 percentage points.
