Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, a Republican, has proposed a bill aimed at prohibiting the display of foreign flags on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, specifically referencing the Ukrainian flags showcased during Tuesday’s Congressional address — an act he has labeled as immature and “deeply offensive.”

Moreno (R-Ohio), who immigrated from Colombia and became a legal U.S. citizen at 18, articulated his conviction against flying foreign flags in Congress while introducing the “Allegiance Act,” which seeks to ban foreign flags on Capitol premises.
“When I arrived in this country as a child, I pledged allegiance to America and only America. That is why it is profoundly offensive to observe our elected officials displaying the flags of foreign nations like Ukraine in Congress,” Moreno emphasized.
“We took an oath to prioritize the American people – let’s start demonstrating that by ceasing the flow of billions to foreign conflicts while everyday Americans struggle,” he added.
Before President Donald Trump addressed Congress on Tuesday, Moreno handed out American flags to fellow Republican senators.
Moreno revealed that his motivation for the flag ban was inspired by his own experiences in becoming a naturalized citizen earlier in life.
“I stood before an incredibly stern Marine who pointed at me and said, ‘you better remember you only bow to one flag,’” he recounted.
“It’s disgraceful that we have Democrats bringing foreign flags into the chamber. If they want to highlight why we should prioritize the interests of a foreign land that most Ohioans can’t even locate on a map, then it is an opportunity for Republicans to reiterate our commitment to America.”
“As Americans, there are many things that unite us: our language, culture, flag, and shared history. These are the elements we should celebrate, not use to create divisions,” he concluded.
