Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has appointed Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted as the next U.S. Senator from Ohio. Husted will succeed JD Vance, who is leaving office to become Vice President-elect.

On Friday, DeWine (R-Ohio) revealed that Husted, 57, will fill the recently vacated Senate seat. Husted has served as lieutenant governor since 2019 and has a history of public service in Ohio’s state legislature as well as having held the position of Secretary of State in Ohio.

“I have collaborated with him, I have witnessed his capabilities. I am aware of his understanding of Ohio. I know his commitment to our state and his expertise,” DeWine stated during a press conference announcing the appointment. “These attributes confirm he is the ideal candidate for this role.”

Husted has accepted Governor DeWine’s invitation and will occupy the Senate seat until at least the special election in 2026, which will complete Vance’s remaining two years in office. He expressed on Friday his intention to run for the position in the upcoming election.

Prior to his selection as Senator, there was speculation that Husted might pursue a gubernatorial campaign in 2026 to succeed DeWine.

This week, there was also talk of Vivek Ramaswamy, a presidential contender and the newly appointed co-leader of President-elect Trump’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), possibly being a contender for the Senate seat after meeting with DeWine last weekend.

With DeWine’s choice of Husted for the Senate, Ramaswamy now has a clear opportunity to campaign for the governorship of Ohio, as DeWine is prohibited from running for re-election due to term limits.
