California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, announced on Friday that he has instructed state water and firefighting authorities to conduct an independent investigation into the water pressure loss affecting fire hydrants amid the recent wave of wildfires in Los Angeles County.

“I am initiating an independent investigation into the water pressure loss at local fire hydrants and the reported lack of available water from the Santa Ynez Reservoir. We require answers to ensure this situation is not repeated and that we have every resource necessary to combat these devastating fires,” Newsom stated in a post on X.

Alongside his post, Newsom sent a letter to Janisse Quiñones, CEO of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and Mark Pestrella, the Director of Los Angeles County Public Works.

“The unending reports of diminished water pressure at various local fire hydrants during the fires, as well as the unavailability of water from the Santa Ynez Reservoir, are extremely concerning for me and the community. While hydrant water isn't intended for large-scale wildfire suppression, losing access to hydrant water likely hindered efforts to protect homes and evacuation routes,” Newsom expressed.

“We require clarification on how this occurred. Thus, I have tasked state water and firefighting officials with compiling an independent post-incident report to investigate the reasons for lost water supply and pressure in municipal systems during the fire occurrences, and to propose measures local entities can adopt to ensure adequate water for emergency responses in future crises,” he added.

Newsom further requested the LADWP and Los Angeles County officials to “rapidly conduct a thorough review of their local preparedness and response protocols to guarantee available water supplies for emergencies, documenting any causes for the observed water pressure loss and supply deficiencies.”

Republican leaders, including President-elect Donald Trump, criticized Newsom for his failure to take preventive action to stop wildfires from reaching catastrophic levels, evident in the ongoing destruction in Los Angeles County and surrounding regions, which is experiencing one of the worst fire series in its history.

“Governor Gavin Newscum declined to sign the water restoration declaration presented to him, which could have enabled millions of gallons of water from surplus rain and snowmelt in the North to flow daily into various regions of California, including those currently engulfed in devastating flames,” Trump noted in a Truth Social post.

“One of the most stunning and picturesque areas of the United States is being ravaged. It's reduced to ashes, and Gavin Newscum should step down. This disaster is entirely his responsibility!!!” Trump added.

As wildfires rage on, at least 10 lives have been lost, and over 35,000 acres have burned throughout LA County.
