Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota Now Prohibited Entry by Seventh Native Tribe

South Dakota GOP Gov. Kristi Noem has been banned from seven Native American tribes in her state.

The Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, located in central South Dakota, announced on Tuesday that they are banning her from their reservation. Noem has now been banned from all but two reservations in the state.

The ban comes after Noem’s tweet on Tuesday where she mentioned, “The lack of tribal law enforcement officers has created multiple deadly crises on our reservations.”

Noem also introduced Algin Young as her new Tribal Law Enforcement Liaison, who was previously fired as police chief for the Oglala Sioux Tribe after testifying about cartels on tribal lands.

Prior to this ban, reservations across the state had already banned Noem following her claims during a speech to the Legislature regarding Mexican drug cartels infiltrating some reservations.

Other tribes joined in after she suggested during a town hall meeting that cartels could be “personally benefiting” certain tribal leaders.

“I’ve got nine Native American tribes, and the cartels are set up on our tribal grounds,” Noem told Newsmax. “They are facilitating this drug trafficking, this human trafficking through my tribal grounds here in South Dakota, because I don’t have jurisdiction there.”

The tribes have called for an apology from Noem for her remarks. Peter Lengkeek, the chair of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, told NPR that cartels are not present on the reservations.

“We have cartel products, like guns and drugs,” Lengkeek explained. “But they pass over state highways to get to the reservation. So, grouping us together and implying that all tribes are involved in this shows the ignorance of the governor’s office.”

Noem, once considered a potential running mate for former President Donald Trump, has faced criticism after writing about killing her 14-month-old dog, Cricket, in a new book. She also omitted a passage where she detailed meeting North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
