California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, along with other state lawmakers, is slated to meet on Monday to champion California’s “progressive initiatives” ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

As part of preparations for a potential legal battle against what Democrats are labeling “expected federal challenges,” Newsom is urging his allies in the Legislature, who maintain supermajorities in both houses, to authorize additional funding for the attorney general’s office during a special session at the California state capitol on Monday.

On Monday, Democratic Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel proposed allocating $25 million to enhance the attorney general’s defense unit. He asserted that these funds would be aimed at “protecting” state programs concerning illegal immigration, abortion rights, climate initiatives, and “civil rights” from anticipated federal pushback.

“While we always hope to work in tandem with our federal counterparts, California is prepared to tenaciously safeguard our interests and values against any unlawful actions taken by the incoming Trump Administration,” Gabriel stated.

During Trump’s first term, California officials initiated over 120 lawsuits against his administration.

“Officials estimate that the state incurred approximately $42 million in legal expenses during Trump’s first term,” as reported by Newsweek, emphasizing that Newsom and California’s leaders showed little hesitation in deploying taxpayer funds on lawsuits that ultimately had minimal impact on Trump’s administration.

Newsom remains steadfast in opposing the GOP’s envisioned America, which includes a society guided by the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, the right to bear arms, religious freedoms, reduced taxation, more stringent criminal laws, a robust economy, the exclusion of biological males from female sports and safe spaces, curbing illegal immigration, and restoring parental authority in lieu of a politically motivated educational framework in California.

“We’re not going to be caught off guard,” Newsom emphasized during a press briefing, underscoring the state’s readiness to challenge Trump’s federal mandates.

Trump has previously criticized Newsom and California’s policies. During his 2020 campaign, he labeled the governor as “New-scum” and condemned the state’s pro-illegal immigration laws, extreme environmental regulations, and escalating homelessness crisis. Furthermore, he has indicated intentions for mass deportations of illegal immigrants, a demographic that significantly comprises California’s workforce relative to other states.

“In 2022, the six states with the highest unauthorized [illegal] immigrant populations were: California (1.8 million), Texas (1.6 million), and Florida (1.2 million),” as noted by the Pew Research Center. However, since these statistics were recorded in 2022, it is likely that the number of illegal immigrants has considerably increased by the end of 2024.

Gabriel elaborated on his perspective regarding the forthcoming second Trump term.

“We are prepared, if necessary, to be at the forefront of resistance and to counter any unlawful or unconstitutional measures from the Trump administration,” Gabriel, who heads the budget committee, remarked, according to AP News.
