California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom deviated from the consensus of his party by expressing that he finds it “deeply unfair” for biological males identifying as transgender females to participate in women’s and girls’ sports.

These comments were made during the inaugural episode of his podcast “This is Gavin Newsom,” which featured conservative figure Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, the co-founder and head of Turning Point USA, an organization advocating for conservative principles on school campuses, engaged in a surprising dialogue with Newsom during the episode, which aired on Thursday. The conversation included moments where Newsom sought Kirk’s advice on the Democratic Party.
“Get better ideas, governor,” Kirk advised. “You ought to boldly declare, ‘The young man poised to clinch the state championship in the female long jump — that shouldn’t happen.’ As governor, it’s your responsibility to say, ‘No.’”
This remark referenced a recent event where a transgender student athlete, a biological male, triumphed in a girls’ triple jump contest in California. Kirk urged Newsom to share his thoughts on the fairness of biological male athletes competing against biological females.
“I believe it’s a matter of fairness; I wholeheartedly agree with you on that,” Newsom responded. “It’s fundamentally unjust.”
As a potential candidate for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, Newsom is the most prominent Democratic figure since the airing of this podcast episode to express opposition to transgender athletes competing in women’s and girls’ sports.
With Republicans regaining control of both Congress chambers and the White House post-November elections, only Reps. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) and Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) have notably criticized their party’s robust advocacy for biological males in female sports, even amid their stated gender identities.
In January, Texas Democratic Representatives Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar unexpectedly joined Republicans in supporting legislation to ban transgender-identifying males from competing in women’s and girls’ sports.
However, Senate Democrats blocked the progress of this proposal earlier this week.
A February survey by New York Times/Ipsos revealed that 79% of Americans believe transgender athletes, particularly biological males, should not participate in women’s and girls’ sports.
Meanwhile, some social media users reacted skeptically to Newsom’s apparent change of stance.
