This awkward incident occurred after she requested that the senators recite the Pledge of Allegiance together.
“Join me in pledging allegiance to our flag,” she instructed, before turning toward the flag.
“I pledge allegiance to the United States,” Harris declared, forgetting to include the phrase “to the flag.”
Users on social media expressed a mix of laughter and relief that Harris, who struggled to recite the Pledge correctly, was unable to win the presidency.
“Kamala Harris doesn’t know the Pledge of Allegiance… This woman really wanted to be President! It’s quite [embarrassing] that the Vice President doesn’t know the Pledge of Allegiance,” remarked comedian Terrence K. Williams.
“Vice President Kamala Harris doesn’t even know the Pledge of Allegiance. This is utterly pathetic. Listen as she attempts to recite it and completely fluffs it. America dodged a bullet,” stated Chester Tam, a digital media strategist for the Trump campaign in Massachusetts.
This viral blunder followed the news that Mike Johnson (R-La.) reclaimed the position of House Speaker with a narrow victory.
“Congratulations to Speaker Mike Johnson for achieving an unprecedented Vote of Confidence in Congress. Mike will serve as a Great Speaker, benefiting our Country. The American People have awaited four years for Common Sense, Strength, and Leadership. They will finally receive it, and America will become greater than ever before!” President-elect Donald Trump responded.
Furthermore, Texas Representative Chip Roy (R-Texas), one of the GOP members who switched to support Johnson at the last moment, elaborated on the choice.
“Today, we voted for Mike Johnson for Speaker of the House due to our unwavering support of President Trump and to ensure the timely certification of his electors. We made this decision despite our genuine concerns regarding the Speaker’s performance over the past 15 months,” Roy wrote in an X post.
“To fulfill the historic mandate earned by President Trump for the Republican Party, we must be strategically organized to utilize reconciliation – along with all legislative tools – to address crucial border security, spending cuts, pro-growth tax policies, regulatory reforms, and reversing the damages inflicted by the Biden-Harris administration,” he added.
