Foreman’s family confirmed he died on Friday night in Houston, though the cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
“A faithful preacher, devoted husband, loving father, and proud grand and great-grandfather, he led a life characterized by steadfast faith, humility, and purpose,” they shared.
“A humanitarian, Olympian, and two-time heavyweight champion, he was widely respected—a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a relentless protector of his legacy, working hard to maintain his good name—for the sake of his family.”
“We are thankful for all the love and prayers during this time and ask for privacy as we celebrate the remarkable life of a man we were fortunate to call our own,” his family added.
President Donald Trump issued a statement honoring Foreman, labeling him a “great fighter.”
Trump remarked that Foreman possessed the “heaviest and biggest punch in the history of boxing” and claimed that aside from Muhammad Ali, “if you got hit, you went down.”
He hailed Foreman as a “wonderful person, with a personality that was larger than life,” extending condolences to his family.
In 1968, Foreman burst onto the scene at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City, where he earned a gold medal.
He subsequently made his professional debut shortly after the Olympics. In 1973, Foreman defeated the previously undefeated heavyweight champion Joe Frazier, securing his first title just three years into his professional journey.
Foreman retired in 1977 and shortly after became an ordained minister. He dedicated his life to God, preaching at a church in Houston.
After a decade away from the sport, Foreman announced his return in 1988, approaching 40 years old.
In 1994, at the age of 45, Foreman reclaimed the heavyweight champion title by defeating 26-year-old Michael Moorer, making history as the oldest heavyweight champion ever.
Foreman eventually retired for good in 1997 with a record of 76-5 (68 KOs).
Additionally, he gained fame for his George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine, one of the most successful products commercially in recent history.
