The pilot of the helicopter also perished in the incident.
Authorities from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) reported that a helicopter was confirmed to be in the river as of 3:40 p.m. local time.
“Due to a helicopter crash in the Hudson River, near the West Side Highway and Spring Street, expect to see emergency vehicles and potential traffic delays in the vicinity,” stated the NYPD.
Along with the Spanish family, the body of the pilot was recovered from the scene.
Witnesses recounted that they observed the helicopter “split in two” just before crashing close to Pier 40. The aircraft was reportedly making a distinctive “thudding” sound prior to its fall.
“I heard a loud crack … I looked over … and I saw a helicopter rolling onto its side and then hitting the water,” an anonymous witness shared with ABC7. “I didn’t see anyone come out.”
It remains unclear whether the helicopter was being used for tourist operations or was privately owned. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, as inquiries are in the initial stages.
Rescue and recovery efforts continue as of now.
Footage shared online depicts the helicopter sinking into the river as emergency responders were mobilized to the location.
The helicopter has been identified as “N216MH – a Bell 206L-4,” according to Flight Radar.
Since 1977, more than 32 fatalities have been reported due to helicopter accidents in New York City.
