The Department of Health and Human Services has announced plans to cut nearly 10,000 full-time positions.

This announcement, made on Thursday, will result in a reduction of about 10% of the workforce at the country’s federal health agencies.
“When combined with HHS’ other initiatives, including early retirements and the Fork in the Road program, this restructuring will reduce staff from 82,000 to 62,000 full-time employees,” the department stated in a press release, projecting savings of $1.8 billion for taxpayers.
Additionally, a fact sheet presented to senior health officials indicated that “no further cuts are currently anticipated” apart from those announced recently.
The fact sheet revealed that HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans to eliminate 3,500 positions at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and 2,400 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“This reduction will not impact drug, medical device, or food reviewers, nor will it affect inspectors,” the fact sheet noted regarding the changes at the FDA.
Overall, including other cuts from the Trump administration, such as early retirements and buyouts, around 20,000 individuals will depart from the health department, according to HHS.
Kennedy remarked this week that the DOGE team, led by Tesla founder Elon Musk, had “identified significant waste within my department and HHS.”
He further highlighted that numerous divisions within HHS had overlapping functions and emphasized the need to eliminate unnecessary spending.
“With Elon’s assistance, we are eliminating these redundancies,” Kennedy stated on Monday.
Moreover, Kennedy has proposed establishing a new entity called the Administration for a Healthy America, aiming to save money and “dramatically enhance our service quality.”
“We intend to give the agency a clear mission to significantly enhance American health and boost employee morale. We’re going to streamline various departments while maintaining their essential functions,” Kennedy said in a video released on Thursday.
The Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, which was designated as a separate agency during the Biden administration to manage pandemic-related issues, will now be integrated into the CDC.
Furthermore, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, which faced potential cuts of nearly 90% of its workforce through DOGE, will merge with another agency to form the Office of Strategy.
“The entire federal workforce is facing downsizing, making this a challenging time for HHS,” Kennedy acknowledged in his comments.
The former presidential candidate also mentioned in the video that they were “prioritizing the reduction of excess administrators while bolstering the number of scientists and frontline health workers” in this process.
“We’re committed to streamlining our agency and eliminating redundancies, urging everyone to unite behind a clear, ambitious mission: I want every HHS employee to start their day asking, ‘What can I do to enhance American health today?’” he added.
