Chris Columbus, the director of “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” recently expressed concerns that removing President Donald Trump’s cameo from the film could lead to his deportation by the administration.

Born in Pennsylvania and raised in Ohio, Columbus revealed that watching “The Godfather” at age 15 ignited his passion for filmmaking.
In a recent interview with The San Francisco Chronicle, the 66-year-old director reflected on Trump’s brief appearance in the 1992 film.
Columbus described Trump’s cameo as having become something of a “curse.”
“It’s become an albatross for me. I just wish it was gone,” he remarked.
The phrase “become an albatross” metaphorically refers to a burdensome or guilt-inducing issue.
“I can’t cut it. If I cut it, I’ll probably be sent out of the country,” Columbus joked, alluding to Trump’s past comments about mass deportations. “I’d be deemed unfit to live in the United States, so I’d have to return to Italy or something.”
Though born in Pennsylvania, Columbus has Italian roots from his grandparents. He is not related to the explorer Christopher Columbus.
The plot of “Home Alone 2” follows the antics of “Kevin McCallister,” portrayed by young Macaulay Culkin, who accidentally boards a flight to New York instead of Miami with his family. Determined to make the most of the situation, he ends up at the Plaza Hotel, where he encounters then-businessman Donald Trump, asking for directions during their brief exchange.
Columbus contended that Trump, who owned the Plaza Hotel at the time, “bullied his way into the movie.”
“We paid the fee to film at The Plaza, but [Trump] also insisted, ‘The only way you can use the Plaza is if I’m in the movie,’” Columbus shared with Business Insider in 2020.
In contrast, Trump refuted Columbus’s narrative, implying in a 2023 Truth Social post that Columbus was “begging” him to feature in “Home Alone 2.”
“I was very busy and initially didn’t want to do it. They were nice, but also very persistent,” Trump recounted. “I agreed, and the rest is history! That little cameo exploded and the movie was a massive success, especially during Christmas time.
“People reach out to me whenever it’s aired. Now, 30 years later, Columbus tries to claim I bullied my way into the movie. Nothing could be further from the truth. That cameo helped make the film a hit… Just another Hollywood individual seeking some publicity from my name!”
Following Trump’s presidency, fans of “Home Alone 2” have repeatedly urged Columbus to remove him from the film.
