The sudden gunfire led to an immediate lockdown of the hospital, which has around 5,900 staff members and hundreds of patients on site.
According to Lt. Ben Hancock of the Troy Police Department, the suspect discharged a handgun five times outside Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, injuring the employee twice in the arm. Hancock also mentioned that the victim’s vehicle was struck in the incident.
The 25-year-old victim, a resident of Troy, remains alive and is currently in stable condition.
During a press conference on Thursday, Police Chief Josh Jones stated that the victim and the suspect were previously friends but had experienced a recent falling out. “The victim was able to identify the suspect, which helped us narrow down our investigation,” Hancock added.
“The suspect was taken into custody at a residence in Troy after fleeing the scene. Police reported that after being contacted by phone, the suspect walked out and surrendered peacefully,” as noted by ABC News.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been disclosed by law enforcement officials.
The incident unfolded around 7 a.m. local time on Thursday, with the suspect being detained just hours later.
“One victim is currently receiving medical treatment in the emergency department. Patients scheduled for services should refrain from coming to the hospital at this time and may directly contact their respective departments,” Corewell Health informed the media.
Corewell Health implemented a lockdown of the facility immediately “as a precautionary measure.” However, the hospital has since started to resume normal operations.
