House Democrat: Reduce funding for colleges with antisemitic behavior
Rep. Jake Auchincloss, D-Mass., expressed his belief on Sunday that the possibility of cutting federal funding to Harvard University and other institutions should be considered due to their handling of alleged campus antisemitism.
During a recent visit to Harvard University, where ongoing pro-Palestinian protests have been taking place, Auchincloss, an alum of the school, raised concerns about potential violations of federal law in the management of antisemitism on campus.
Speaking on Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday,” Auchincloss stated that a discussion about Harvard losing federal funding “needs to be on the table.” He highlighted the prevalence of antisemitism at Harvard and other universities and emphasized the need for a culture of open discourse, free speech, and mutual respect for all students.
Referencing a report from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) that rated several schools poorly on their antisemitism prevention policies, including Harvard, Auchincloss expressed disappointment in the current state of affairs. He mentioned that he has reached out to universities in Massachusetts with failing grades to address the issue and improve measures to combat antisemitism on campus.
Amid calls from pro-Palestinian protesters for universities to cut ties with Israel, Auchincloss emphasized the importance of creating a suitable learning environment for all students, regardless of background.
