House Republicans Consider ‘Minibus’ Approach for Allocating Certain Expenses
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is proposing a “minibus” to fund portions of the government that can be quickly agreed upon to prevent a government shutdown. The “minibus” would include appropriation bills for military construction and Veteran’s Affairs (MilCon-VA), defense, Department of Homeland Security, and disaster relief funding, according to GOP conference members. House fiscal conservatives had originally intended to split off all appropriations bills into separate votes, but House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government Chair Steve Womack, R-Ark., believes the “minibus” proposal would allow the conference to come to a consensus. Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., wants to see spending numbers before passing appropriations packages. However, House Freedom Caucus member Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., believes blending Homeland with disaster relief is possible. The goal of House conservatives is to decrease spending. © 2023 Newsmax.
