House Republicans Request Testimony from Prison Official Regarding Navarro

A letter was sent to the Federal Bureau of Prisons by a group of House Republicans on Thursday, urging the director to testify about obstructing a request for an interview with former White House official Peter Navarro.

Peter Navarro was sentenced in January to four months in prison and a $9,500 fine for contempt of Congress for refusing to testify following a congressional subpoena from the select committee investigating the Capitol riot. He began serving his sentence in March.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, along with committee members Reps. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., and Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., signed the letter calling for the BOP director to testify. Gaetz had initially requested to interview Navarro, but his request was denied by BOP Director Colette Peters, citing that Navarro was “too notorious.” They also mentioned that Navarro was not allowed to meet with his attorney.

The letter raised concerns about the politicization of BOP and requested Peters to testify before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance next month to address Navarro’s case and the treatment of inmate Jason Galanis, who claims to be facing retribution from the Department of Justice.
