Hurricane the K-9, recognized as the most decorated dog in U.S. history, has passed away at the age of 15.

Marshall Mirarchi, his handler, announced the sad news on Monday.
“As much as we anticipated this moment, nothing could truly prepare us. His absence leaves a massive void that cannot be filled,” he expressed.
As a former Special Operations Canine with the U.S. Secret Service, Hurricane became renowned after subduing a White House intruder on October 22nd, 2014, while former President Barack Obama and his family were present.
After the intruder vaulted over the White House fence, he was confronted by a Secret Service canine. Following a struggle, Hurricane intervened and brought the perpetrator to the ground.
Due to Hurricane’s swift actions, the Secret Service agents managed to apprehend the intruder, who had come alarmingly close to the First Family.
Hurricane retired in 2016 due to injuries sustained during the incident. According to Mirarchi, the intruder severely injured Hurricane, but he showed immense resilience.
The intruder left Hurricane with hip damage and leg swelling.
Over his illustrious career, Hurricane accrued numerous accolades, including the United States Secret Service Award for Merit, the Department of Homeland Security Award for Valor, the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) Order of Merit, and recognition as the American Medical Center Top Dog.
The Belgian Malinois made history by becoming the first dog to earn the Animals in War and Peace Distinguished Service Medal, securing a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Additionally, he and Mirarchi were presented with the Secretary’s Award for Valor by former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson for their protective service to the Obama family.
On February 11th, 2025, Southwest Airlines honored Hurricane before his passing, transporting him back to Washington, D.C., on its Freedom One Plane.
In tribute to Hurricane, the nonprofit organization Hurricane’s Heroes announced ongoing efforts to raise funds for the medical needs of retired K-9 heroes.
“Our nonprofit, which represents Hurricane’s legacy, has gained even more significance for us now,” said Mirarchi.
