In a surprising turn of events, Republican House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chair James Comer expressed his support for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (AOC) pursuit of a leadership role on the committee representing the Democrats.

“I’m a big AOC fan,” Comer (R-Ky.) remarked, using the abbreviation for Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). “While I may not align with most of her policies, I believe she is a good individual and quite articulate.”
Comer’s unexpected endorsement comes on the heels of Ocasio-Cortez’s announcement that she is seeking support to take over from Marland Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) as the lead Democrat on the committee, competing against 74-year-old Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) for the position.
“I didn’t have a strong relationship with Jamie Raskin, and that’s well known,” Comer stated.
“When asked about the race for ranking member, I tell the press the Democrats have nowhere to go but up after having Jamie Raskin for the past four years. AOC and Gerry Connolly both have the potential to do well. … I look forward to collaborating with the next ranking member,” he added.
“If it’s AOC, I anticipate we’ll have a productive working relationship. Of course, we’ll differ on many policies, but I regard her as a commendable and articulate candidate for the Democrats in that role,” Comer commented.
Should Ocasio-Cortez be successful in her efforts, she would make history as the youngest individual to serve as the ranking member.
“Leading Democrats on the House Oversight Committee during Donald Trump’s second term is a significant and impactful responsibility,” she stated in her campaign announcement.
“Now, more than ever, we must uphold the Committee’s legacy of holding administrations accountable and addressing the economic challenges and inequalities facing American life,” she added.
On the other hand, Connolly is presenting himself as the “experienced choice” for the Democrats, boasting eight terms in the House.
“I believe this election is about capability and experience rather than generational change or age disparity. That’s the foundation of my campaign. My 16 years on the committee demonstrate my ability to combat opposition and advocate for Democratic principles,” Connolly asserted.
“I’m adept at dealing with the media and the public, skilled in questioning witnesses, and experienced in managing a committee,” he continued in a CNN interview. “These are the credentials I’m sharing with my colleagues, and I feel optimistic about my chances.”
