Impasse between Rep. Greene and Speaker Johnson to be mediated by Trump
Former President Donald Trump is actively supporting House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and trying to mediate between Johnson and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., who threatened to file a notice to vacate.
Trump and Greene have frequent conversations, with Politico reporting that they spoke at length over the weekend regarding Greene’s actions against Johnson. Three Republican sources revealed that Trump urged Greene to stand down.
“I have reliable sources indicating that President Trump did intervene,” said Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Mont. “I hope that she will realize that pushing forward will not end well. Trump emphasized this point, and I hope she heeds his advice.”
Another GOP source, speaking anonymously, confirmed that Trump “advised her not to proceed.”
Newsmax reached out to sources for Trump, Greene, and Johnson for comments.
While representatives for Trump and Greene have not responded, Johnson’s office reported that the speaker has had discussions with Greene and Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who supports her call for an ouster vote.
Johnson confirmed on Tuesday that he met with Greene and Massie the day prior and found the discussion productive. He emphasized that the talks were not negotiations but part of his daily interactions with GOP members to consider various ideas for improvements and changes.
Meanwhile, Trump publicly endorsed Johnson at a recent event, urging Greene not to proceed with the motion to vacate and stressing the need for Republican unity leading up to November.
Greene and Massie are scheduled to meet with Johnson for further discussions, exploring alternative ideas such as defunding special counsel Jack Smith and other spending deals. Johnson also mentioned speaking with Trump, who reportedly advised against Greene’s actions.
Republicans are cautioning both Greene and Johnson about potential repercussions and political fallout of their actions, emphasizing the importance of unity and avoiding internal divisions within the party.
