In Florida, Biden blames Trump for abortion ‘nightmare’

During a campaign stop in Tampa, President Joe Biden pointed fingers at his Republican opponent Donald Trump for the new abortion restrictions in Florida as Democrats strive to win over Trump’s home state.

Recently, Florida’s Supreme Court approved a six-week abortion ban effective May 1, before many women are aware they are pregnant. The court also allowed a ballot measure for legalizing abortion until viability to be presented to voters this November.

The overturning of Roe vs. Wade by the conservative U.S. Supreme Court in 2022 paved the way for states like Florida to establish their own abortion laws. Trump’s pledge to appoint judges who would overturn Roe became a reality with the appointment of three judges who did.

“There’s one person responsible for this nightmare,” Biden asserted, “He brags about it. Donald Trump.”

Biden emphasized that abortion should be a constitutional right and not a matter of state’s rights but of women’s rights.

Responding to Biden’s statements on abortion, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida took to social media to refute Biden’s claims. “Floridians are not buying Joe Biden’s rhetoric, and in November, we will be pivotal in sending him back to Delaware,” he declared.

Democrats believe that tough abortion restrictions in states like Florida and Arizona, which upheld a 160-year-old abortion ban, will sway voters towards Biden in the 2024 election. Polls and state ballot initiatives indicate that U.S. voters largely oppose strict abortion bans.

Due to new laws in Southern states, abortion access has become almost non-existent, forcing women to cross state lines.

Biden accused Trump of being anxious about facing accountability for the chaos and cruelty he has caused. “We will hold him accountable,” Biden asserted.

At a later event, Biden hinted that Florida could be in play nationally.

Despite Florida’s weighty 30 Electoral College votes, Republicans have been gaining ground over Democrats in recent years. Some Biden aides are cautious about the party’s optimism in the state.

Trump won Florida in 2020, and DeSantis secured a significant victory in the governor’s race in 2022. Opinion polls show Trump with a considerable lead in Florida.

The Biden campaign has launched 133 offices nationwide but has yet to open one in Florida.
