Increased border crossings prompt demand for updated legislation
Lawmakers on both sides are discussing the recent decrease in border crossings as election season intensifies. They agree that this decline may not be permanent and that legislation is needed to sustain it.
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, separately discussed the issue on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
Murphy attributed the decrease to effective diplomacy between the United States and Mexico but cautioned that without updated laws and increased resources at the border, the numbers could rise again.
Customs and Border Protection reported a decrease in illegal crossings in April compared to last year, with 179,725 encounters this year and 211,992 last year.
Gonzales echoed Murphy’s sentiments about Mexico playing a role in reducing border crossings and emphasized the need for a long-term solution.
