Israel and US Differ on Post-Conflict Plans

Discussions have been ongoing between the U.S. and various Arab nations regarding the potential formation of a multinational force in the Gaza Strip post-current conflict.

According to a source familiar with the talks, numerous issues need resolution before determining when the war has officially ended. The demands from Arab countries include an Israeli acknowledgment of the two-state solution, a U.S. push towards a Palestinian state, and the requirement for a U.S.-led force involving American personnel on the ground.

Pentagon press secretary Patrick Ryder has made it clear that there will be no American military presence on the ground in Gaza, posing a challenge to the U.S.’s aspirations for a multinational force. The U.S. has been intensifying pressure on Israel to present a “day after” plan, with National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan set to visit Saudi Arabia and Israel for further discussions on the matter.

Former IDF intelligence director Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin emphasizes the importance of a post-conflict plan to establish a reliable humanitarian aid system that reduces Hamas’ influence and prevents its resurgence. The lack of a concrete alternative government option increases the difficulty of achieving this goal.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has stirred controversy by advocating for the elimination of Hamas’ governmental capabilities and calling for the establishment of a new governance structure in Gaza. There is a divide within the Israeli government over the issue, with coalition members expressing differing views on the future of Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance on Gaza remains firm, emphasizing the need to eliminate Hamas to pave the way for a secure future. The contrasting views between the U.S. and Israel on the role of the Palestinian Authority post-conflict are likely to strain relations between the two allies.
