Israeli FM receives backlash from US over disclosure of Libya meeting

The US administration expressed sharp criticism towards Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen for his handling of a meeting between the Libyan and Israeli Foreign Ministers. Protest notes were transmitted from the US State Department and the US Embassy in Israel. Libyan Foreign Minister Najla El Mangoush fled to Turkey and an investigation into the meeting was announced following its disclosure. Libya claimed that the meeting was a chance encounter and not prearranged. The disclosure of the meeting led to protests in Tripoli and other towns in Libya. The US purportedly knew about the meeting and encouraged it, but was blindsided by the disclosure. Israeli sources argue that the disclosure was planned in advance, while US sources claim that Libyan officials were shocked by the news. The Israeli Foreign Ministry has agreed not to comment publicly on the issue. Israeli opposition criticized Cohen, with an unnamed source from the Mossad stating that he had caused irreparable damage to Israel’s ties. Cohen defended himself, saying that the Foreign Ministry regularly works covertly to strengthen Israel’s connections.
