Israeli Victory in Gaza Unlikely, Says Top Biden Official
The Biden administration expressed doubt that Israel will achieve “total victory” in defeating Hamas in Gaza, according to U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell.
Campbell’s remarks, made at a NATO Youth Summit in Miami, are the strongest yet from a top U.S. official acknowledging the challenges Israel faces in achieving its military goals in the region.
He noted that Israeli leaders often talk about the idea of a “sweeping victory on the battlefield,” but Campbell believes that outcome is unlikely. He compared the situation in Gaza to post-9/11 conflicts where violence continued despite military actions.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to achieve “total victory” against Hamas, but the ongoing conflict has resulted in thousands of casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza.
Campbell warned against a major military offensive in Rafah, a city in Gaza where many displaced people are seeking shelter. He emphasized the need for a political solution, citing the importance of respecting the rights of Palestinians.
He acknowledged the challenges of achieving peace in the region but stressed the importance of moving towards a political resolution that respects the rights of all parties involved.
