Jim McLaughlin Tells Newsmax: Trump’s VP Options Are Extensive

Former President Donald Trump is currently in Florida this weekend meeting with a wide slate of potential running mates as he works to narrow down his shortlist. Pollster Jim McLaughlin told Newsmax on Saturday that this demonstrates the depth of talent within the Republican Party right now.

McLaughlin emphasized that he does not know who Trump will ultimately choose as his running mate, but pointed out that Kamala Harris is one of the few politicians more unpopular than Joe Biden. This poses a dilemma for the Democratic Party.

In a Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll, more than 70% of grassroots conservatives expressed preference for a candidate who is a person of color or a woman, or both. This highlights the diversity within the Republican Party.

Both McLaughlin and GOP strategist Luke Ball agreed that the extensive list of potential candidates showcases the talent within the Republican Party. Ball noted that many of these candidates may find roles in a potential Trump 2024 administration even if they are not chosen as the vice-presidential candidate.

Recent polls showing Trump leading over Biden, with a new Rasmussen survey putting him ahead by 10 percentage points. McLaughlin attributed this lead to the failures of Biden’s presidency.

Additionally, the Emerson College poll this week showed Trump leading in all swing states, further cementing his popularity. The ongoing college protests and perceived failures of the Biden administration are also contributing to Trump’s lead in the polls.
