On Saturday, the first day of a six-day series of funeral events started in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. His flag-draped casket, which began its journey from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, was transported in a motorcade through Plains en route to Atlanta, Georgia.
Carter’s former Secret Service agents served as the pallbearers for the late president.
In Atlanta, Carter’s casket will make a stop at the state Capitol. A ceremony will be held at the Carter Center, and his body will lie in state at the Capitol until Tuesday, allowing the public to pay their respects. Afterwards, the late president and his family will proceed to Washington, D.C.
Once Carter arrives at Joint Base Andrews, his motorcade will head to the U.S. Navy Memorial for a horse-drawn caisson procession to the U.S. Capitol, where he will lie in state until Thursday.
President Joe Biden has declared Thursday as a National Day of Mourning. Carter’s funeral will occur that day at Washington National Cathedral.
Numerous notable attendees are expected at the 39th president’s funeral. President-elect Donald J. Trump shared at his New Year’s Eve party that he would attend, and Biden is anticipated to deliver one of the eulogies.
After the funeral in Washington, D.C., Carter’s body will return to Georgia for a private service at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.
Carter, born on October 1, 1924, was the longest-living U.S. president.
Before becoming president, Carter was the governor of Georgia.
In 1976, following the Watergate scandal, Carter, a Democrat, triumphed over Republican President Gerald Ford. He faced challenges during his presidency, including the 444-day Iran hostage crisis, which impacted his re-election bid in 1980. He served one term before losing to Ronald Reagan.
Carter had been under hospice care since February 2023.
