Johnson Calls on Supreme Court to Intervene in Trump Appeal
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., urged the Supreme Court to intervene in Donald Trump’s appeal after the former president was convicted on all 34 counts in his New York paperwork trial.
“I do believe the Supreme Court should step in,” Johnson said a day after Trump became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes.
During an appearance on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends,” Johnson made his comments, stating that the justices, many of whom he knows, are deeply concerned about the situation.
“So, I think they will set this straight, but it’s gonna take a while,” he added.
A Manhattan jury returned a guilty verdict on Thursday after 9.5 hours of deliberations. Trump was found guilty of falsifying business records to hide payments to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
Sentencing is set for July 11, just before Trump is expected to be officially named the GOP presidential nominee. His legal team is expected to file an appeal after sentencing.
Johnson called the developments “unprecedented” and expressed concerns about the impact on public trust in the justice system.
Calls for recusal of conservative Supreme Court justices have emerged amid concerns about impartiality in Trump-related cases and the events of Jan. 6, 2021.
In a letter to Congress, Justice Alito addressed criticism over his wife’s flags, stating they do not warrant his recusal.
Justice Thomas has also faced calls for recusal due to his wife’s alleged support for Trump’s election fraud efforts.
