The 119th Congress commenced its session on Friday morning, with the first agenda item being the election of a new Speaker of the House.
With the Republicans holding a slim majority of 219-215, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) can only afford to lose two votes. Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has indicated he will not support Johnson’s bid to remain in the role.
Massie cast his vote for Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) as House Speaker.
Representative Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) chose to vote for Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).
Representative Keith Self (R-Texas) voted for Byron Donalds (R-Fla.).
The Democratic caucus nominated Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) as their candidate for Speaker.
President-elect Donald Trump has openly backed Johnson, urging him to retain his position.
On Friday morning, Trump expressed on Truth Social that Johnson (R-La.) is nearing unanimous support from the GOP structure, asserting that a win for Johnson would signify a significant victory for the party.
The Speaker vote must be completed before the House can engage in any official matters, including ratifying Trump’s anticipated 2024 election victory.
