Johnson: Ukraine Aid Depends on Border Agreement
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his intention to prioritize tighter border security during his meeting with President Joe Biden, stating that providing aid to Ukraine is not feasible without a border security deal.
Johnson emphasized the need for border security before discussing aid for Ukraine, stating “We have to take care of our own house. We have to secure our own border before we talk about doing anything else.”
Biden was scheduled to meet with Johnson and other congressional leaders to discuss U.S. immigration policy and funding for Ukraine.
Republicans in Congress have hindered emergency funding for Ukraine, alleging that Biden’s policies have contributed to a surge of immigrants into the United States and are threatening a partial government shutdown to tighten security along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Regarding Ukraine aid, Johnson sought assurances from Biden that the situation in Ukraine would not become another Afghanistan.
Senate leaders expressed optimism about passing legislation to satisfy both parties.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed optimism about reaching an agreement, while Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell suggested that a vote on foreign aid could occur as soon as next week.
