Judge’s Ruling Upholds Wisconsin Election Official in Office

A Wisconsin judge has ruled against a vote in the GOP-controlled state Senate to fire top elections official Meagan Wolfe from her position at the Wisconsin Elections Commission over her handling of the 2020 election, saying she will “legally” continue to hold the spot. 

Republican lawmakers had claimed for months that Wolfe had been behind a plan to rig the state’s election, which President Joe Biden secured by more than 20,000 votes, reported The Hill. 

Dane County Circuit Court Judge Ann Peacock said Friday she agrees with the elections commission that it would be best for the public to keep stability in the system ahead of the 2024 elections and cleared Wolfe to remain on the job.

There have been multiple partial recounts in Wisconsin after Biden’s win, as well as a review from a conservative law firm and a nonpartisan audit. Further, the election has resulted in numerous federal and state lawsuits. 

Peacock wrote that the injunction would “provide stability to protect against any further legally unsupported removal attempts” made against Wolfe. 

She also barred the defendants, under her ruling, from taking official actions that would go against the order. 

“I hope this will put an end to attempts by some to target nonpartisan election officials and fabricate reasons to disrupt Wisconsin elections,” Wolfe said in a statement. “The effort to undermine me was especially cruel given that the defendant legislators themselves admitted in court that I remain the lawful administrator.”
