On Friday, Riner defeated Tushishvili in a 100+ kg knockout match by ippon, the highest score in judo.
After the match, Tushishvili reacted by kicking Riner in the groin and placing his hand on Riner’s head after flipping him to the ground.
As a result, Tushishvili received a red card, the harshest punishment possible.
Despite the loss to Riner, Tushishvili could have competed for the bronze medal; however, he has been suspended from further individual judo competitions until a final decision is made by the IJF. Tushishvili is also barred from the Saturday mixed team competition.
In the gold medal match, Riner went on to win against Kim Minjong of South Korea by ippon, securing his third gold medal after victories in 2012 and 2016.
