UPDATE 8:11 AM: Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as Prime Minister of Canada and leader of the Liberal Party during a press conference on Monday.

He will step down once a new leader is appointed.
Additionally, Trudeau stated that Parliament will be suspended until March 24th, instead of the initially scheduled January 27th, to facilitate the selection of a new Liberal Party leader.
8:00 AM: Reports indicate that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is poised to announce his resignation this week.
This information was first reported by the Globe and Mail on Sunday evening, referencing three sources. The timeline for Trudeau’s resignation remains uncertain, but it is expected before the national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
This announcement comes amid mounting pressures for Trudeau to resign, particularly with President-elect Donald Trump threatening to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports.
Additionally, Trudeau’s former finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned in December following significant disagreements regarding Canada’s economic direction in light of the incoming Trump administration.
“For the past several weeks, you and I have been at odds over the best path forward for Canada,” wrote Freeland, who was previously viewed as a supporter of Trudeau.
“Our country is facing a serious challenge,” her letter continues. “It is crucial to maintain our financial stability now so we have the resources needed for a potential tariff battle.”
It remains unclear whether Trudeau will remain in office until a new leader is chosen or if he will vacate immediately.
The Liberal Party is anticipated to lose power to the Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilevre, based on public opinion polling ahead of the election required by late October.
Trudeau has been in ongoing discussions with Trump since the latter’s election win, with Trump suggesting the idea of Canada as the 51st state of the United States.
