This news was first reported by the Globe and Mail on Sunday evening, citing three sources familiar with the matter. The exact timing of Trudeau’s resignation remains uncertain, but it is anticipated to happen before the national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
This latest revelation follows mounting pressure for Trudeau to step down in light of President-elect Donald Trump’s escalating threats of imposing 25% tariffs on all imports from Canada.
Moreover, Trudeau faced further challenges after his finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned in December due to a clash regarding Canada’s economic strategy and the impending Trump administration.
“For the past number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada,” Freeland, who was formerly viewed as a loyal supporter of Trudeau, stated.
“Our country is facing a grave challenge,” she added. “That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war.”
According to the report, it remains uncertain whether Trudeau will remain in office until a successor is chosen or if he will depart immediately.
Polls suggest the Liberal Party is likely to be replaced by the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilevre, in the upcoming election that must occur by late October.
Trudeau has been in regular discussions with Trump following the Republican’s election victory, during which Trump has proposed that Canada could potentially become the 51st state of the US.
