Recent reports indicate that Karmelo Anthony, a 17-year-old who confessed to fatally stabbing fellow student Austin Metcalf at a Texas track meet, has reportedly been residing in a $900,000 home with his family. This is in stark contrast to his request for a judge to reduce his $1 million bond, citing “financial difficulties.”

As per DailyMail, this residence, which supposedly has a monthly rent of $3,500, features vehicles including a black Acura, a white Suburban, and another car parked in the driveway.
Currently, Anthony is under house arrest at his family’s home in the gated community of Richwoods in Frisco, Texas. He was released from jail on Monday after his bond was reduced to $250,000, in light of his admission to the murder of Metcalf, corroborated by eyewitness accounts, as the report detailed.
A neighbor disclosed to reporters that the family had just acquired a new vehicle.
“He got a new car,” the resident remarked. “If you look at the license plate, it’s got a paper tag that says it expires June 4.”
Moreover, another neighbor mentioned that Anthony’s family is “not poor” given their residence in the gated community.
“They’re not poor people. That’s for sure,” he stated.
Nonetheless, it remains uncertain how long Anthony and his family have resided at the property.
Anthony’s bond was recently modified from $1 million to $250,000 after defense attorneys claimed that the family could not manage the higher bond.
“Given that Karmelo has no prior criminal history… given that this young man has not been in any sort of trouble before, $1 million is not necessary,” Defense Attorney Mike Howard argued, also mentioning the potential need for additional security measures.
“This family needs to be able to survive. There’s been a tremendous amount of pressure. I think at this point, living in a gated community, given everything, the safety of their younger children is very warranted. Security details and criminal defense are not inexpensive.”
Howard proposed that Anthony be fitted with an ankle monitor and placed under house arrest to provide him with a chance to stay with his family.
Furthermore, following the hearing, Howard expressed to the media that “every Texan deserves the right to defend themselves when they reasonably fear for their life.”
“Self-defense is a protection that applies to each and every one of us. There are two sides to every story. Karmelo is a 17-year-old kid and an excellent student. He is the captain of his track team and the captain of his football team. This is a tragedy all the way around for both families.”
He further stated that after a comprehensive investigation, “the truth will emerge,” adding that the current investigation appears to be one-sided.
“Bond, as the judge said, is not meant to be a tool of oppression; it shouldn’t keep individuals in jail. Its purpose is to ensure attendance in court,” Howard noted.
“I know both sides would appreciate it if the emotions surrounding this situation could be tempered,” he continued.
Recently, an online fundraiser for Anthony has been initiated, which has currently surpassed $447,000 as of April 16th at 12:52 PM PT, nearing its $500,000 target, according to the fundraising page.
“While legal defense is a crucial element of this journey, we want to clarify that this fund is not only for legal expense purposes. The funds will also cover various urgent necessities that have arisen due to this situation, including — but not restricted to — the safe relocation of the Anthony family due to increasing safety threats, as well as essential living costs, transport, counseling, and further security measures,” the site for Anthony’s fundraiser explains.
However, CBS 11 News reported that Anthony’s father, Andrew Anthony, indicated to the court that he has no access to the contributions collected and could not afford the original $1 million bond — which is purportedly why he sought a reduction.
“Jacob Wells, co-founder of the well-known crowdsourcing platform [GiveSendGo], informed TMZ that no funds have been released, as the company requires ‘clarity from the campaign recipient on fund utilization to ensure that donors are assured how their contributions are being utilized,’” TMZ reported on Wednesday.
Anthony had been held at Collin County Jail since being accused of fatally stabbing Metcalf and abandoning him “in his twin brother’s arms” during an athletic event in Frisco on April 2nd.
The incident unfolded when Metcalf, a junior at Memorial High School, asked Anthony, a student at Centennial High School, to relocate from under his school’s pop-up tent during a rain delay — a request Anthony declined, according to the arrest report.
Anthony then unzipped a bag, reached inside, and warned Metcalf: “Touch me and see what happens,” as a witness recounted to the authorities. Following this, Metcalf “grabbed Anthony to insist he move, resulting in Anthony pulling out a black knife and stabbing Austin once in the chest,” police stated.
Metcalf’s twin brother, Hunter, rushed to Austin’s assistance but was unable to save him.
“I placed my hand on [his chest], tried to stop the bleeding, and held his head while gazing into his eyes. I could see his soul departing, and it took my soul as well,” Hunter recounted in a touching interview with Fox News the following day.
Anthony attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended.
“I’m not alleged, I did it,” Anthony admitted to police upon his arrest, according to the report. “I was defending myself,” he asserted to officers. “He put his hands on me.”
Anthony’s lawyer, Deric Walpole, informed NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that he feels his client acted in self-defense when he stabbed Metcalf.
“My client claims it was self-defense, and I have no reason to doubt that, but I’ll need to establish facts, engage with witnesses, and ascertain events before forming any conclusions about what transpired,” Walpole explained. “I currently have no reason to suspect it wasn’t self-defense.”
