Katie Couric Criticized for Characterization of Trump Supporters
Veteran journalist and TV show host Katie Couric is facing criticism for her characterization of Donald Trump voters as part of an “anti-intellectualism” movement.
Couric made these comments during an appearance on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast.
“The socio-economic disparities, class resentment, and anti-intellectualism and elitism are driving many of these anti-establishment individuals – who are Trump voters – so, I believe this is a significant issue that needs to be addressed,” Couric told Maher.
“Globalization and the shift from an industrial to a technological society – if you’ve ever felt envy or resentment, it is such a corrosive and bitter, almost repugnant feeling,” she added. “When people who are struggling see those who have it all and are looking down on them, it breeds anger, resentment, and grievance.”
Her comments sparked backlash on social media.
“I have never been envious, and I find many Trump supporters highly educated in various fields. I think Couric is being snobbish and ignorant. She has been isolated in her bubble for so long that she is completely disconnected from reality,” one user posted as reported by X, the New York Post reported.
“This is truly disgusting and highlights how out of touch she is. Make no mistake, this is how the media perceives Trump supporters,” another user posted, according to the Post.
Maher challenged Couric’s assessment, stating that Trump voters see him as the only barrier “between us and madness.”
“Not to justify Trump, but to defend the people who continue to vote for him,” Maher said. “Because they see the alternative as even more perilous. ‘My child is coming home from school and thinks he’s a racist.’ He’s 5. What have you been telling him? ‘My son thinks he may not be a boy,’ and maybe that’s true, these things happen. They say, ‘That’s why I’m voting for Trump.'”
