Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear was questioned about his stance on a state law that grants Republicans the authority to select a successor for Senator Mitch McConnell if he were to leave his seat early. Governor Beshear did not provide a definitive response and stated that he believes McConnell will serve out his term. Under the current law, if there is a vacancy, the governor can make a temporary appointment from a list of three names recommended by the Republican Party. A special election would later be held to determine the permanent replacement. Kentucky has not had a Democratic senator since 1999, and Beshear faces a tough reelection challenge from the state’s Attorney General, who has received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. McConnell’s term ends in 2026.
