Kids are Encouraged to Identify as LGBTQ, According to LA Times Poll
According to a recent poll by the Los Angeles Times, 48% of Americans believe that popular culture influences young adults aged 18 to 29 to identify as LGBTQ+ even if it’s not their true identity. The survey, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago and released this week, highlighted the divisive opinions regarding queer children, particularly those who identify as transgender or nonbinary:
- 40% view the increased attention on transgender and nonbinary Americans in politics and media as negative, while only 16% see it as positive for society.
- 77% believe that elected officials are using debates over transgender and nonbinary people as a distraction from more pressing issues.
- 57% think that social stigmas have prevented older generations from openly coming out as LGBTQ+.
- 53% believe that transgender and nonbinary individuals are influenced by society or make a lifestyle choice, compared to 46% who believe they are born that way.
Dan Malato, a senior research director at NORC Center, stated that the survey questions were replicated from a 1985 survey to measure the shift in public opinion towards the LGBTQ+ community over the past four decades.
