“It’s a pretty thrilling time,” remarked Ken Hon, Scientist-in-Charge at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has reported that the eruption commenced at 2 a.m. local time on Monday, causing Kilauea’s volcano alert system to reach its top warning levels within a secured area of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.
Hon indicated that lava is flowing at a “very rapid rate,” which is typical during the initial phases of an eruption. He noted that the lava fountains have reached heights of approximately 200 feet.
Currently, the activity is confined to the summit caldera, as per the USGS.
The primary concern lies in the elevated levels of volcanic gases, which include water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide.
Officials warn that these gases can create a visible haze referred to as volcanic smog, which may have extensive effects on areas downwind. Locals and visitors are advised to minimize their exposure, as volcanic ash and particles can cause irritation to skin and eyes.
