Kiley and Foxx Propose Bill to Maintain Temporary Position for Labor Secretary
Republican Representatives Kevin Kiley and Virginia Foxx have introduced legislation to prevent the nominee for Secretary of Labor, Julie Su, from serving indefinitely in the role. Su, picked by President Joe Biden in March, has faced bipartisan opposition due to the loss of $32.6 billion in taxpayer funds during her time as California Labor Commission and her advocacy for policies that harmed independent workers. Though Su currently lacks the votes for Senate confirmation, Biden intends to keep her in the role as acting secretary, as she was already serving as deputy secretary. The proposed legislation, known as the Department of Labor Succession Act, aims to align the tenure of an acting secretary with the Federal Vacancies Reform Act of 1998. The move from Kiley and Foxx is seen as an effort to prevent Su from taking her “record of failure” to a national level.
