The Trump administration has decided to end temporary protected status for over 600,000 Venezuelan migrants living in the U.S., as announced by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Wednesday.

Noem criticized her predecessor Alejandro Mayorkas for complicating matters for the Trump Administration by signing an order that permits a significant number of Venezuelan migrants to maintain temporary protected status, effectively allowing them to “stay here and violate the laws” for another 18 months.
“Furthermore, the new mandate will empower federal agents to ‘assess all individuals present in our country, including the Venezuelans here and the members of TDA (Tren de Aragua),’” Noem stated.
She recalled that during her involvement in the initial raids in New York City, local residents expressed gratitude towards federal agents for addressing the presence of criminal migrants.
“The citizens of this country desire resolution. They want their neighborhoods to be secure. It was truly remarkable to witness people passing us on the street in the early morning, simply saying thank you, thank you for being present,” she remarked.
This announcement comes in the wake of the Biden administration’s recent extension granting Venezuelan migrants an additional 18 months to obtain work permits through the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, which was finalized just over a week prior to Trump’s return to the White House.
Meanwhile, it was noted that the ongoing extensions are not set to expire until April. Noem is tasked with making a decision regarding the expiring protections by Saturday; otherwise, they will be automatically renewed for a further six months, as reported by the New York Times.
