Legislators Advocate for Simplified Bipartisan Spending Proposal
Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican from Pennsylvania, and Jared Golden, a Democrat from Maine, have emphasized the urgency of passing their bipartisan measure for aid to Ukraine and border security. According to The Hill, they are urging their colleagues to support this “pared-down” proposal.
Golden stressed the time-sensitive and existential nature of providing aid to Kyiv, stating on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” that their bill combines border security with foreign aid for Ukraine, highlighting the critical need for action.
While a bipartisan Senate bill has been stalled in the House for weeks, Democrats are attempting a discharge petition to force a floor vote without Speaker Mike Johnson’s assistance. Golden believes this approach may not succeed and underscores the immediate necessity of aid for Ukraine.
Both Golden and Fitzpatrick’s proposal aims to reduce spending from $60 billion to $49 billion by eliminating humanitarian aid for Israel and Ukraine and including the controversial “remain in Mexico” border policy. Despite disagreement among Democrats, Golden believes a bipartisan solution is key.
Fitzpatrick emphasizes the urgent situation in Ukraine and the need to prevent Russia from gaining ground. He sees bipartisan House support as crucial for Senate approval of any bill that emerges.
