Liberal Organizations Urge Senator Durbin to Review Alito’s Actions

The liberal judicial activist group Demand Justice has sent a letter to Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., requesting an ethics investigation into Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.

Demand Justice, along with Accountable.US, the Center for American Progress, MoveOn, and the Revolving Door Project, are urging Durbin to push for Alito’s recusal from any election-related cases. This comes after reports of politically charged flags being flown outside Alito’s residences in Virginia and New Jersey.

“It is crucial for you as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee to promptly conduct investigations and make determinations regarding (a) Justice Alito’s recent actions and, potentially even more significant for the public’s confidence in the rule of law, (b) the handling of this issue by Chief Justice John Roberts,” the letter states.

The controversy arose following reports that an upside-down U.S. flag and an “Appeal to Heaven” flag were displayed outside Alito’s homes on different occasions. These flags were allegedly associated with the Jan. 6 protesters.

Alito has rejected calls for his recusal, asserting that his wife, Martha-Ann, was responsible for flying the flags in question and they were not related to former President Donald Trump or the Jan 6 protests. The upside-down American flag is a distress signal, and the “Appeal to Heaven” flag dates back to the Revolutionary War as a symbol of God prevailing over tyranny.

In response to Alito’s refusal to step aside, Durbin emphasized the need for an enforceable code of conduct within the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice John Roberts declined an invitation to discuss the flag controversy with Democratic senators earlier on Thursday.
