On Friday, President Donald Trump announced his intention to sign an executive order aimed at reversing the Biden administration’s initiative promoting paper straws, which plans to eliminate plastic straws in the federal government by 2027.

“I will be signing an Executive Order next week ending the ridiculous Biden push for Paper Straws, which don’t work. BACK TO PLASTIC!” Trump stated in a Truth Social post on Friday morning.

The Biden administration had previously focused on phasing out plastic straws across the federal organization over the coming decade, citing concerns about straws “littering our ocean, poisoning the air of communities near production facilities, and threatening public health.”

Trump criticized paper straws back in 2020 for their tendency to “disintegrate” rapidly.

He also pointed out that a far greater number of COVID-19 face masks were discovered in the ocean, becoming toxic to marine life, than plastic straws — yet no one seemed concerned or called for a ban on face masks as they had with straws.

“Has anyone tried those paper straws? They’re not working too good,” Trump remarked previously.

In addition, Trump marketed his own line of branded plastic straws during his 2020 campaign, emphasizing the urgent need for them by stating that “liberal paper straws don’t work.”

Similarly, former President Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris had supported the ban on plastic straws during the 2020 campaign, with Harris declaring, “We DO need to ban the plastic.”

The return to plastic straws is viewed as a win for Trump’s allies in the energy sector, as the production of plastics relies on oil and gas, an industry that the Trump administration is keen to revitalize as part of its economic agenda.
