In a close vote of 51-45 on Monday, the Senate approved McMahon as President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education.
Having co-founded WWE with her spouse, Vince McMahon, she previously held the role of Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA) during Trump’s initial term before resigning in 2019 to rejoin the private sector.
In November, Trump stated that he wanted McMahon to “put herself out of a job” by potentially dissolving the entire department.
“It’s a big con job,” Trump remarked regarding the Education Department. “They ranked the top countries in the world. We’re ranked No. 40, but we rank No. 1 in one area: cost per pupil. We spend more per pupil than any nation, yet we rank No. 40.”
McMahon expressed her complete agreement with Trump’s initiative to dismantle the department in a letter to Democratic members of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP).
“President Trump holds that Washington’s bureaucracy ought to be eliminated so that education can return to the states, where it rightfully belongs. I fully endorse and agree with this mission,” McMahon stated.
During her confirmation hearing, McMahon acknowledged that “many Americans today are experiencing a system in decline,” but emphasized that “the opportunity before us in the next four years is significant.”
“If confirmed, the department will not remain passive while Jewish students face attacks and discrimination,” McMahon asserted. “It will prevent schools from allowing boys and men in female sports and spaces. Furthermore, it will safeguard parents’ rights to direct the moral education of their children.”
